Nicaragua

(1) Journey to San Juan del Sur

9 days, 8 nights

Overview:
Once synonymous with war and violence, Nicaragua has emerged as a positive force in modern eco-tourism of Latin America. Due to its past, Nicaragua still flies below the radar, but not for long. The country is home to a string of active volcanoes, the largest lake in Central America, quaint colonial cities and laid back beach towns. Enjoy the current positive exchange rates while you can before the world discovers what beauty the country holds. As diverse as anywhere in Latin America, Nicaragua won’t be untouched for long.

The Basics:
Fly into Managua and head south via private transport to the colonial city of Granada. If you like steak, Granada is renowned for some of the best cuts of beef in the world. Stay for four nights with day trips to the Lake Nicaragua and the active volcanoes surrounding it. One excursion will take a day to circle the Island of Ometepe in Lake Nicaragua via a dirt bike. You’ll pass banana plantations, towering volcanoes, ancient ruins, the San Ramon waterfalls and swimming holes. Another day you’ll hike to the peak of an active volcano along the “Ring of Fire” with stunning views. The trip will culminate in a four night stay south in the beach village of San Juan del Sur. Take yoga classes facing the water, get a massage, eat fresh fish and learn to surf.

Additional options:
- Visit a market to see hammocks being made by hand in Masaya.
- Sand boarding down a volcano

Physical difficulty: EASY

We’ve been on trips to Mexico, DR, Panama, and Nicaragua. We always try to pick our favorite but they are all so different. Funny story. You know you’re in good hands when someone in Nicaragua asks you where you are headed to next and I just said… "I don’t know, ask Ryan" (our guide). Haha. I turn brain off and relax in the great weather.
